During the first half of the semester, every student will complete a small research project investigating the biography of a 19th century European person of their choosing (see list above. These biographies should not simply be a recitation of the dates of a person’s life, death, and significant achievements, but rather should focus on how some element of the subject’s life better illuminates the context of his or her life and larger historical developments.This research will culminate in the production of a paper approximately 1500 words in length and will be evaluated on the quality of the research, the strength of the writing, and the proper use of Turabian/Chicago Manual of Style citations. Paper #1 will be due on Wednesday, March 2nd Late papers will be penalized 5 points/day after the due date.
